We lived in a town with a small neighborhood that had a grass airstrip. A few classics lived there, including this Stearman that belonged to my teacher’s next-door neighbor. He gave rides to almost anyone who was interested. I still remember it vividly.

I spotted one of these at the airport where I’m in flight school. I missed my chance to snap a pic and talk to the owner. I hope to catch him with it out of the hangar again someday.

Not many planes that are prettier than a bright yellow Steadman!

But wet and gloomy here, so not much urgency to getting this day started.

I spent an hour of my morning watching a Lithuanian production of The Little Prince (1966)  on Amazon Prime. The film is about what you’d expect from a 60's era Soviet bloc movie maker. It is very heavy with that aesthetic. It’s strange, but oddly riveting. As much as I’m all about airplanes, I have never read Saint-Exupery’s book. I need to remedy that. There is also a wonderful adaptation available on Netflix.

My uncle, who passed away a couple of years ago, was a pilot. He didn’t own a Stearman, but he was always looking for an excuse to go up. I remember attending a family gathering in PA what must have been 20 years ago. Everybody was sitting around being bored and Uncle Don said, “Anybody want to go flying?” We all jumped at the chance, and headed out to the small airport outside Somerset. I remember flying over the city, over the cement block factory that my grandfather had started and my uncle now owned , over my grandparent’s old house. It was a blast. This picture was taken by my brother on another flight with Uncle Don. He looks so much like my father in this picture. He finally had to stop flying due to macular degeneration.

That was our weather yesterday!

And I saw your post - sounds like you’re off to a great start on the weekend. Although pissing off a teenager isn’t exactly hard work...

My dad and his family are the aviation side of my clan — and almost all from PA, too (mostly the other side of the state, Philly area). But they collectively have countless hours flying around there and have probably been to every small airport in the mid-Atlantic. My grandfather was also an author and one of his lesser-known, more esoteric books was actually called Aviation and Pennsylvania . He also owned a Cherokee Six at one point, then later an Aztec that he and my grandmother flew all over the country, plus Mexico and the Bahamas. He died of Alzheimer’s about 2002 and my grandmother is almost 97 and still kicking.
